How Bustan began
Bustan started in Germany in 2017, among families who wanted for their children the
grounding in Qur’an and Arabic they had grown up with themselves — and could
not find where they now lived. Then the same parents asked whether maths and science could
be taught the same way, by the same teachers, in the same week. That is how both halves of
what we do came to be here.
What began as classes for a handful of children has grown into a school that teaches
families across Europe, the United Kingdom, Canada, the United States, the Middle East,
Malaysia, Singapore, Hong Kong, Australia and India.
Our name is the Arabic word for a garden. It is how we think about the work: children are
not filled with information, they are tended, and what grows in them takes years and
patience.
What we believe education is for
The Islamic Golden Age produced scholars who saw no division between studying revelation
and studying the world. The same person read scripture and mapped the stars. We teach as
though that is still true, because we believe it is.
So a child at Bustan learns Qur’an and Tajweed, and also science, mathematics and
history — not as competing subjects, but as one education that produces a person who
is confident in their faith and capable in the world.
