Qur'an & Tajwid

Online Qur’an classes for children — taught in English

Recitation with Tajwid, the meaning of what is being recited, and Hifz for children who are memorising. Live, in batches of two to four, with the same teacher each week. The part most parents are looking for and cannot find: it is taught in English, so a child growing up in London, Toronto or Dubai understands the explanation as well as the sounds.

A Qur'an and Tajwid lesson on the Bustan platform: the teacher and the reciting student side by side with the rest of the class on screen

Reciting it and understanding it, from the first lesson

A child who can pronounce a verse perfectly and has no idea what it is asking of them has been taught half of it. So recitation and meaning run alongside each other here from the start, not meaning later once the reading is fluent.

Tajwid is taught from the makhārij — where in the mouth each letter is actually made — rather than as a list of rules to recite back. Because the batch is two to four children, every child reads aloud in every class and the teacher hears each one. That is the whole reason the batches are this size: recitation cannot be assessed in a room of thirty.

In order

How a child moves through it

  1. The letters, and where they are made

Each letter by its makhraj, with the mouth position shown and practised, so pronunciation is right before it becomes a habit that has to be undone later.

  2. Harakāt, and reading short words

The vowel marks, then letters joining, then whole words — at the point where decoding stops being effortful and starts being reading.

  3. Tajwid, rule by rule, with the reason

Nūn and mīm sākinah, qalqalah, madd, ghunnah and the rest. Each one named, coloured on the page, explained, and then found by the child in a verse without the colours.

  4. Meaning, verse by verse

A child-friendly explanation of what the sūrah is saying, in English, so the recitation is of something understood.

  5. Hifz, for those memorising

Memorisation with a revision schedule, for children who want it. It is optional, and we will tell you honestly whether your child is ready for it.

Every subject, same promises

What a class is like, whichever subject it is

Two to four children

Small enough that nobody waits their turn to be noticed, and that a teacher can slow down for one child without holding back another. One to one where that is right.

Taught in English

With Malayalam, Arabic, Hindi or Urdu where a child is more comfortable. You can speak to us in any of them.

The same teacher each week

Who remembers what your child found hard last time, which is the entire point of a small batch.

Around your week

Class times built around school, work and your time zone — wherever in the world that is.

You are told what happened

A note on what was covered, periodic written reviews, and the recording if a class was missed. Built from what the platform recorded, not from memory.

The trial is free

And registering commits you to nothing. We agree the fee with you after the trial, once we know the subject, the batch and how often.

Questions parents ask about this subject

Are the classes taught in English?

Yes. English is our medium of instruction, and for most children growing up outside India it is the language they reason in. Where a child is more comfortable in Malayalam, Arabic, Hindi or Urdu, we teach them in that instead — and you may correspond with us in any of them.

Is Bustan an online madrasa?

If what you mean is live Qur'an, Tajwid, Hifz and Islamic studies taught by qualified teachers, then yes — that is exactly what this subject is, and several of our parents describe us that way. But it is only half of what we do: the same children also take maths, science, English and their school syllabus with us, on the same timetable, with the same teachers reporting to you. So “online school” is nearer the truth than “online madrasa”.

My child cannot read Arabic at all. Is that a problem?

No, and most children start there. The first stage above assumes nothing. If your child already reads, the trial class is where we find out how well, so they start at the right point rather than being bored or lost.

How quickly will my child finish a sūrah or complete Hifz?

We will not give you a date, because nobody honestly can — it depends on the child, the number of classes a week and what they do between them. What we will give you is a specific account of where they are now and what the next step is, in writing, every term.

Does the teacher hear my child recite in every class?

Yes. That is what the batch size is for. In a group of two to four, every child reads aloud every time, and one-to-one is available where that is the right arrangement.

Can a girl be taught by a female teacher?

Yes. Tell us at registration and we will arrange it.
